Secondary Resources

Supports for secondary students can vary depending on their diverse courses. In many cases, teachers will provide students the subject-specific databases and apps to use.

Other Green Tools for your students can be found in their D2L account, accessible through wcdsb.ca/students.

Below are general supports for any secondary student and their supportive parents.

WCDSB Virtual Learning Commons (VLC)

Our board-wide online learning commons! Be sure to check the “Accessing Password-Protected inks From Home” section on the left to access all apps. Students can read ebooks, listen to audiobooks, review research databases, watch videos/movies, and more.

EduGAINS Home Support

Curated by the Ministry of Education, this page of the EduGAINS site contains multiple activities and toolkits to help foster a love of math in your home. Below are a few examples of what’s offered:

Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) – General Carpenter (Pre-Apprenticeship Program)

Learn new skills while creating promising economic opportunities in an exciting, hands-on work environment. The average starting annual income for participants who complete the program is over $30,000, and the program includes free tuition and training. University of Waterloo – Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC)

CEMC at Home has been developed to support teachers, students and parents during these challenging times. Most weekdays, they will post something for each of four grade levels: Grade 4 to 6, Grade 7/8, Grade 9/10 and Grade 11/12. The goal is to provide a wide variety of fun and educational ways to do mathematics and computer science while at home practicing social distancing. The resources will include games, new problems to solve, applications, videos, pointers to existing materials and more.

In your D2L homepage, click the Math box at the top, then on Mathify. Enjoy free math help from Ontario educators!

Knowledgehook Summer Resources (Grades 3-10)

Knowledgehook has partnered with the Ministry of Education to provide Knowledgehook Open Access, so that all students can practice the learning goals in Ontario’s math curriculum! Knowledgehook is a WCDSB approved resource that provides Ontario curriculum aligned math questions for your child.  You can find the login instructions here.

The Canadian Encyclopedia

Canadian articles and ideas on history, art, politics, science, and more. In your D2L account, click the Research button at the top, then click Canadian Encyclopedia.

Install Read & Write on Home Computer

Learn how to install the Read & Write toolbar onto your home computer. This tool is common on WCDSB devices and allows students to text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities. Here are some additional supports for using Read & Write:

TED-Ed

Students can watch TED talks, coupled with lessons to promote deep reflection about their lives and how they connect to others globally.

NatGeo

Explore our world through games, videos, and more. Students can create science experiments, learn about our natural world, and read about places and people from across the globe.
